9. Was sind deine schlechtesten Angewohnheiten?

Meine Antwort auf diese Frage hängt wirklich davon ab, wie man Angewohnheiten definiert, denke ich – und davon, wie man “schlecht” definiert.
Dinge, die Angewohnheiten in einem recht konventionellen Sinn sind, und mir auf irgendeine Art schaden: ich schiebe viel vor mir her, kratze an meinen Pickeln (oder anderen Unregelmäßigkeiten auf meiner Haut) und esse letzten Endes meistens Schokolade oder ander Junk Food-mäßige Sachen, wenn niemand anderer für mich kocht (ich schaffe es, Nahrungsshakes oder Brot zu machen, aber so ziemlich alles darüber hinaus bewirkt, dass ich auf Junk Food zurückgreife).

9. What are your worst habits?

My answer to this question really depends on how you define habits, I guess – and also on how you define “bad”.
Things that are habits in a pretty conventional sense and hurt myself in some way: I procrastinate a lot, scratch at my pimples (or other irregularities in my skin), and usually end up eating chocolate or other junk food-ish things if nobody else cooks for me (I manage to prepare nutrition shakes or sandwiches, but pretty much anything above that will make me revert to junk food).

My sister just said to me “why should I be sad about robespierre’s death? wasn’t he evil?” could you respond to this??

The answer to your sister’s question: because Robespierre has wrongfully become one of the most vilified people in all of human history. Because Robespierre was killed in a conspiracy that successfully stained his name for hundreds of years after, because he advocated and fought for equality, and because he’s a great example of what happens when good people and good intentions become overwhelmed by chaotic political circumstances.

Rather than debate violence’s necessity or lack thereof in revolution, rather than inspect the darker portions of power and struggle, it’s generally easier to make an exaggerated cartoon villain of Robespierre. This cartoonish vision is what’s fed to people to this day. We’re taught in school (at least in the U.S.) that Robespierre was a power-hungry maniac who singlehandedly sent hundreds off to the guillotine for the sake of some bizarro sense of purity. Basically we’re taught that Robespierre was evil, that he was Grand Dictator of France, and that we should hate him. Also we’re generally taught history in a way that lacks nuance and removes context. This isn’t to say that one can’t make moral judgements on history, but it is to say that it’s easier to make blanket condemnations than explore the nuances of history that are frequently more grey than black & white.

I would, if you care to discuss this with your sister, let her know that this impression of Robespierre as bloodthirsty dictator is false. Many historians (in fact I would say the majority of historians specializing in the French Revolution) agree this is not by any means an accurate depiction of Robespierre.

1) Robespierre wasn’t a bloodthirsty sadist.

Earlier on Robespierre argued against the death penalty (1791). He also argued against slavery. Robespierre argued that all men, including the poor and slaves, should all have the same rights. He was quite concerned with poverty and corruption in the Catholic Church. As a lawyer he consistently defended the poor, and would advise them on how to settle out of court (so basically he didn’t make much money from it). This was somebody who was committed to and advocated for equality. He was remarkably less sexist than many of his contemporaries. He fought for women to be accepted into the Academy of Arras in his hometown.

An example of Robespierre’s lack of sadism: he argued against war with foreign powers during the early 1790s. At the time the Girondin faction was calling for war out of hopes that the chaos would reveal the King as treasonous. Robespierre, rather reasonably, thought this was a terrible idea and that it would hurt France. He turned out to be right.

2) Robespierre wasn’t a dictator, and wasn’t even in charge. Also Robespierre did not as an individual send hundreds of people directly to the guillotine. Oh also, all this business about Robespierre wanting to kill all the impure (yes this was taught to me in high school) is patently false.

Robespierre held some sway since many respected him as principled and consistent, but regarding governmental positions of actual legal power he was only in one for a single year. He served as one of twelve men on the Committee of Public Safety. The members were elected by the Convention (governing body of France at the time). The CoPS would put out arrest warrants, some of which Robespierre signed. Those who received arrest warrants were sent to the Revolutionary Tribunal for trial. Those found guilty were, yes, sent to the guillotine. In Paris nearly a quarter of people who faced trial ended up living. As somebody personally against the death penalty, this is not something I morally approve of, but one has to understand the chaotic, desperate, and fearful context France was living under during this precise time. Robespierre signed the least amount of warrants on the Committee. Later on during the single year he served on the Committee, Robespierre stopped attending meetings regularly. He would only rarely show up. Arguably, he was extremely disillusioned and depressed by the state of affairs during this time. Robespierre wasn’t a mastermind of the Terror (a violent effort to eliminate internal and external enemies of France, a policy voted for and supported by many deputies) but he did support a limited Terror that would be removed as soon as France was stable. France, at the time, was not stable. The political culture at the time was wrought, in my opinion, with fear and paranoia. Many of these fears were justified as there were some conspiracies, including the conspiracy to put Robespierre and his followers to death because 1) people feared he might put them to death, though he was hardly in the state to do so and 2) because they wanted to use Robespierre as a scapegoat for the worst of the Terror. Arguably the most dangerous position to be in during this time was that of revolutionary leader or deputy. Members of the Convention, and their associates, had the most to be worried about. The infamous adage ‘the Revolution devours its children’ comes to mind. Many deputies and their families/friends lost their life in factional disputes, including Robespierre.

3) Robespierre’s legacy was smeared after his death by surviving extremists in order to pin the worst of the Terror on him

A scapegoat was needed. This isn’t a flimsy conspiracy theory, either. Participants in the plot confessed to it. There is historical evidence. People did so to save their own heads and remain in power as part of a new government.

4) And now for the fluffy reasons. 

Robespierre’s intense connection with his younger colleague Saint-Just, one that I think was likely homosexual, would be one.

There are also his amusing attempts at poetry, his love for birds, his anxiety speaking publicly, his dry sass, his sensitivity, his tendency to break down into tears, and the fact that he survived the death of his mother and his mostly-absent and fully-alcoholic father.

Fragenbloggen 8: Traum

8. Was hast du zuletzt geträumt? Warum, was interpretierst du da hinein?

Das klingt ja nach einer einfachen Frage, aber leider tun sich drei Probleme auf:
1. Ich träume überhaupt recht selten.
2. Ich habe vor einer Weile meinen Schlafrhythmus auf biphasisch umgestellt und schlafe jetzt sechs Stunden in der Nacht und 20 Minuten zu Mittag – dabei schlafe ich ziemlich schnell ein und dann auch durch, ohne zwischendurch so aus Traumschlafphasen aufzuwachen, dass ich mich noch an Träume erinnere.
3. Ich habe außerdem eine Wecker-App, die mich den Wecker nur dauerhaft abschalten lässt, wenn ich dazu aufstehe (d.h. vom Hochbett runterklettere) und einen Barcode dort scanne – spätestens während ich das tue, verfliegen auch noch die letzten Traumfetzen.

8. What did you dream most recently? Why, what do you read into that?

That sounds like an easy question, but sadly, three problems arise:
1. I dream pretty rarely anyway.
2. I’ve changed my sleep rhythm to biphasic a while ago and now sleep six hours at night and 20 minutes at noon – in doing so, I fall asleep pretty quickly and then sleep through without waking up from dream sleep phases so that I still remember dreams in between.
3. I also have an alarm app which only lets me switch off the alarm for good if I get up (that is, climb down from my loft bed) and scan a bar code –  the last dream fragments vanish while I’m doing that at the latest.

So, sorry, no idea. 🙂

Fragenbloggen 7: Tier

7. Mit welchem Tier fühlst du dich besonders verbunden und warum?

Ich fühle mich mit keinem Tier wirklich verbunden.
Versteht mich nicht falsch – ich mag eine Menge Tiere, respektiere alle und bewundere viele. Ich fühle mich nur nicht besonders verbunden mit irgendeinem. Diese Frage fühlt sich sogar ziemlich komisch an – so wie ich das sehe, ist eine Verbindung etwas Wechselseitiges, wie eine Freundschaft, und unilateral eine Verbindung zu einem Tier zu erklären wirkt einfach ganz schön verkorkst, wie ein Stalker, der seinem Opfer seine brennende Liebe erklärt. Und es wird noch schlimmer, wenn ich mit einbeziehe, dass sie sich wahrscheinlich nicht auf ein individuelles Tier bezieht, sondern eine ganze Spezies – als wären all ihre Mitglieder ein und dasselbe. Das ist einfach fucked up.

7. What animal do you feel especially connected to and why?

I don’t really feel connected to any animal.
Don’t get me wrong – I like lots of animals, respect all, and admire many. I just don’t feel especially connected to any. This question feels kind of weird to me, even – as I see it, a connection is something mutual, like a friendship, and unilaterally declaring a connection to some animal just seems pretty messed up, like a stalker declaring their burning love for their victim. And it gets even worse if I factor in that it probably doesn’t mean some individual animal, but a whole species – as if all its members were one and the same. That’s just fucked up.

Whenever my parrot flips out and gets angry, I say, “Hey,” in this soft, comforting voice and then talk to him gently. He calms down within seconds.

I just got frustrated enough at something that I went, “ARGH.” My parrot said, “Hey,” all softly and sweetly like a dozen times over the next minute. It made me feel better instantly.

My parrot is better at conflict de-escalation than most people.

Fragenbloggen 6: Besuch

6. Wenn du wüsstest, dass alle, die du kennst, morgen sterben – wen würdest du heute besuchen?

Ich glaub nicht, dass ich überhaupt jemanden besuchen würde – ich würde mit mehreren Leuten chatten/e-mailen (manchen, die für einen Besuch zu weit weg leben, und manchen, von denen ich mich lieber mit etwas Abstand verabschieden wollen würde), und mit denen persönlich reden, die ohnehin mit mir zusammenleben.

6. If you knew that everybody you know was going to die tomorrow, whom would you visit today?

I don’t think I’d visit anybody at at all – I’d chat/e-mail multiple people (some who live too far away for a visit, some I’d rather say goodbye to from some distance) and talk to those in person who live with me anyway.

Triggers don’t have to induce a complete loss of function to be real. I see that misconception a lot in places like r/TiA (read the thread if you wish) – “she claimed to be triggered, but she didn’t even look upset! Fucking faker.” It is totally possible to be screaming internally but good enough at dissociation to act normally. You aren’t faking your symptoms just because you don’t wear them on your sleeve at all times. 

Also, conditions other than PTSD and panic disorder can be triggered, and it can look very different than your typical panic attack symptoms. If my eating disorder is triggered, there’s no catalytic freakout. What triggering means for me and my disorder is that I’ll be really neurotic about food for a few hours or days. 

tl;dr – all being “triggered” means is that the trigger in question induces a specific brainstate against your will. It doesn’t have to mean a panic attack or a PTSD episode.
